We haven’t met a BMW ‘M’ model we didn’t love so breaking news out of Germany on the updated X5 M and X6 M was eagerly received in the offices of www.carshowroom.com.au.

Biggest news is under the bonnet with both employing a new M TwinPower Turbo 4.4-litre V8 with a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, BMW’s Valvetronic system and direct injection.

Maximum power is 423kW between 6,000rpm-6,500rpm (four per-cent more than the current models) and peak torque of 750Nm is delivered between 2,200rpm-5,000rpm (that 70Nm or 10 per-cent up).

Driving via BMW’s eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, zero to 100km/h takes just 4.2 seconds yet impressively, combined cycle fuel consumption and emissions have both been slashed by 20 per-cent (11.1l/100kms/258g/km).

On the styling front, look for a revised front-end with new air intakes, side gills, BMW’s ‘Air Breathers’, twin-stalk exterior mirrors, ‘M’ 20-inch or optional 21-inch alloy wheels, four tailpipe exhaust system and, on the M6, a rear spoiler.

There’s interior enhancements too but no word yet on Australian details.
