Australian new car sales will need to pick-up in order to see another record year with the July total of 89,867 down compared to 90,235 sales 12 months ago.
Passenger car sales were down by 6.2 per-cent but SUVs were up by 12.7 per-cent.
Toyota continued its dominance of the local market with July sales of 16,846 vehicles
For the fifth consecutive month Toyota Corolla was Australia’s biggest-selling car (3,800 sales) and eight Toyota vehicles – Corolla, Camry, 86, Yaris, LandCruiser 200, Hilux 4x4 and 4x2 and HiAce bus topped their respective market segments.
While Hyundai outsold Mazda in July (8,351 sales to 8,048), year-to-date Mazda is our third biggest-selling brand with a seven-month total of 59,958 sales. Hyundai is fourth year-to-date with sales of 57,948 vehicles.
Ford was fifth in July with sales of 6,210 vehicles and is fifth for the seven months ending 31 July (48,452).
Fiat-Chrysler Group continued its sales surge headlined by the Jeep Grand Cherokee which scored 1,409 sales in July to again be Australia’s biggest-selling large SUV.
Of the luxury brands, Mercedes-Benz maintained its dominance with 1,587 sales in July compared to 993 for BMW. For the seven months which ended on 31 July, Mercedes-Benz has sold 12,211 vehicles while BMW has sold 7,320.
