At the 2017 Los Angeles Motor Show, Toyota has pulled the wraps off an all-new concept meant to excite all lovers of the outdoors called the FT-AC, or Future Toyota Adventure Concept. The rugged and boldly styled off-roader looks rather doable from a production perspective.
It’s also quite green, matching its colour, insofar as it’s meant to leave less of an environmental impact on the wilderness it tackles via its hybrid drive powertrain. Toyota, however, has left the details of the engine and electric motor amalgam very ambiguous.
Judging by how many brutish details the FT-AC’s exterior is lavished with, it’s clear that the automaker wants the concept to be taken as a serious expression of what could be done to create a proper lifestyle-oriented 4x4 should they attempt it in volume. Of course, the ground clearance is now made higher, but other ‘go anywhere’ gear can be found throughout.
There’s a safari-style cargo roof-rack system, removable fog lamps that can be used as portable torches, an LED array that can provide ambient lighting around the FT-AC’s perimeter (useful for campsites), embedded infrared cameras in the side mirrors to illuminate a trail in pitch darkness, and even an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot because…..Instagram.
The all-wheel drive system features an advanced torque vectoring system that should be able to pull it out of even the most tricky of terrain, no doubt aided by the torque reserves made available through the electric portion of its hybrid powertrain.
As with many of the high profile concept cars to come from Toyota this year, the FT-AC still features a lot the same little touches that remind us all that is surely isn’t a production model (yet). The lashings of satin-effect metal on the outside, the outrageous colour combination, and of course those huge 20-inch wheels.
