Toyota’s head-turning Rukus ‘urban utility vehicle’ was unveiled at the New York Motor Show ahead of its local launch on 1 June.
Called the xB in North America, the Rukus is part of the hip, young person American sub-brand called Scion and will be the first of these ground-breaking Toyotas to be sold in Australia.
It’s certainly aggressive – not what you expect from Toyota – and while Toyota Australia does not expect huge sales volumes, the company reckons Rukus owners will be passionate and charmed by their vehicle.
“Rukus is not a mass-market car; it’s an acquired taste that will polarize opinions,” explained Scott Thompson, Toyota Australia’s marketing manager. “Its iconic, boxy shape deliberately challenges the norms of car design – a bold move that is sure to spark vigorous debate.”
Rukus sports a slim-line upper grille and large mouth-like lower opening while the tall, rectangular body delivers a surprisingly spacious and flexible interior.
Safety is impressive with the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarding the U.S. Scion version a ‘Top Safety Pick’ - its highest designation -after a crash testing routine which for this year includes a rollover test.
Like Kia’s SOUL, Toyota Rukus buyers will be able to add their own flair and individualize their Rukus with Toyota genuine and after-market accessories.
Locally, the SOUL offers a choice of petrol and turbo-diesel engines and is priced between $20,990 to $30,890 – Toyota has not yet hinted at Rukus prices or detailed specifications.
