Toyota’s brand-wide styling overhaul steps-up a notch with the launch early next year of the retro-looking FJ Cruiser SUV.
Spectacularly unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show, the hip FJ (from Toyota’s classic 1960s FJ40) might have throwback looks, but it boasts a heap of contemporary technology, not the least of which is its 200kW/380Nm, 4.0-litre petrol engine and five-speed automatic transmission.
And underlying its serious off-road potential, Toyota’s FJ Cruiser is part-time 4WD with a dual-range transfer case.
Ground clearance looks impressive and Toyota says the four-wheel independent suspension affords plenty of wheel articulation to accommodate the most severe of bush going.
Extreme off-roaders will also be pleased to hear the FJ Cruiser adopts body-on-frame chassis architecture and a ‘hose-out’ interior with moulded floor coverings.
And while the white roof, almost vertical windscreen and three windscreen wipers are definitely cues from the early Toyota LandCruisers, one product feature is definitely not…
The rear doors are reverse opening.
Inside are two rows of seats and lots of places to store gear.
So while the FJ Cruiser’s go-anywhere ability will appeal to serious ‘adventurists’, its genuine throwback styling and distinctive looks will also provide lustre to cutting-edge folk in the upmarket part of town.
