Toyota has announced a recall for a total of over 340,000 fourth-generation Prius hybrids globally in response to a brake fault the automaker discovered could materialise in many units of the popular carbon-friendly four-door.

To that end, Toyota Australia issued their own localised statement and said that approximately 300 units of the Prius involved in the recall we sold in Australia, being built between August 2015 and October 2016.

The fault itself stems from a potentially faulty parking brake system that, due to a problematic cable, could malfunction and disengage from its stationary position at which the said parking brake was applied. Should this problem surface while the car’s transmission is left in any gear other than ‘park’ while the ignition is on, the car could roll away.

The Priuses involved are equipped with a manual parking brake system that is operated by a foot pedal that, when depressed, engages a connecting cable that applies the rear brakes.

Toyota Australia expects that parts to rectify this fault will be arriving at dealerships within the month, following which a letter will be sent to owners of affected vehicles with instructions to make an appointment at at their nearest Toyota dealer.

There, a 30 minute free-of-charge procedure will be performed by the authorised technicians to install a parking brake cable clip to prevent unintentional disengagement. Concerned owners can contact Toyota Australia’s recall campaign helpline at 1800 987 366.
