New car sales in August maintained a strong showing with the monthly total of 93,552 vehicles 6.2 per-cent up on August last year. Year-to-date at the end of August, new car sales are ahead of 2011 by an impressive 9.4 per-cent.
Toyota maintained overall leadership with sales in August of 17,996 vehicles ahead of Holden (11,271) and Ford (7,795). Year-to-date, market leader Toyota holds 19.5 per-cent of the market.
Hyundai was the leading import brand in August with sales of 7,732 vehicles – just ahead of Mazda which posted 7,685 sales.
Mazda3 retained its position as Australia’s best-selling passenger car with August sales of 2,990 vehicles while the Mazda CX-5 was our best-selling SUV, racking-up 1,679 sales.
Overall the trend is unchanged with passenger car sales down by 3.7 per-cent compared to August last year while sales of SUVs are up by 18.6 per-cent. Significant growth continues in small SUVs (up by 61 per-cent on August last year) and medium SUVs (up by 14.9 per-cent).
