Toyota has committed to manufacture European market versions of its upcoming new C-segment hatchback at its British plant and invested a further £100 million in the Burnaston, Derbyshire facility.
This brings Toyota’s total investment in Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK)to more than £2.1 billion.
The new Toyota C-Segment hatchback will employ petrol, diesel and hybrid drivetrains and the extra production has created a need for 1,500 extra employees.
Announcing the extra investment, Didier Leroy, President of Toyota Europe said: “Toyota has a long and successful record of building vehicles and engines in the UK and our facilities here are among the finest in the world in terms of efficiency and environmental performance. The investment we are making will secure a dynamic future for TMUK as a leading manufacturing centre for our core models in Europe.”
Amongst Toyota’s global operations the Burnaston, UK plant is one of the most sustainable, setting industry standards in cleaner, low carbon production and harnessing of sustainable energy sources. The plant has Britain’s largest solar panel array, capable of capturing up to 4.6 million kWh of sustainable energy each year and does not deliver any waste to landfill and incineration.
