Iceland’s erupting Eyjafallajokull volcano might be causing massive disruptions to European aviation, but Toyota’s HiLux 4WD ute mastered the lava and ash in the name of science.
Scientists rushing to set up monitoring equipment on the mountain used a specially-equipped Toyota HiLux to ascend the volcano just hours before it erupted sending the devastating ash cloud 10,000 metres into the sky.
Among the modifications, the rugged HiLux was fitted with giant low-pressure 38-inch tyres.
Along the extremely dangerous route, the might HiLux had to content with copious amounts of snow and ice before reaching the point where the extremely brave scientists erected their equipment.
So while the world’s most accomplished aircraft are stuck on the ground, HiLux had the measure of Iceland’s erupting beast.
