As well as dominating the sales charts for utes, Toyota’s HiLux has now dominated Antarctica with a 10,000kms crossing – further than any vehicle has previously managed.
All three Toyota HiLux vehicles, specially modified by Arctic Trucks, achieved the crossing without any problems.
To cope with the extreme temperatures (down to -50°C) the Toyota HiLux’ were fuelled with A1 jet fuel and two of them were ‘6X6’ models.
It wasn’t just a fun trip – along the way, the Toyota HiLux’ set-up a weather station and fuel depot for scientists to use and provided support for an extreme ski race.
Other modifications were a crane to lift heavy equipment, special suspension and crawler gears and extra-large, low pressure tyres which provided a ‘footprint’ 17 times larger than standard rubber.
