Only a concept at this stage, it’s clear Toyota’s FT-86G Sports Concept points to a logical replacement for the Supra and MR2.
Under the bonnet is a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine which – like all genuine sports cars – drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
The FT-86G is a four-seater so it could logically replace both the Supra and the iconic MR2.
In fact the car shown in Sydney is an update on the FT-86 concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009. The latest derivative is longer, wider and shorter than the earlier version.
Styling for the new version has also got tougher with a large air intake and vents on the front, plus a large carbon fibre rear wing, an underbody diffuser and massive twin exhausts.
Toyota sports car fans will pick the FT-86g nomenclature as a relative of the AE-86 sports car (a Corolla derivative) from the 1980s. It too was a small, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive coupe.
A mass-production sports car is clearly on Toyota’s mind as it strives to reconnect its brand with younger new car buyers.
The FT-86G looks almost production-ready even at this stage.
