Hybrid motoring just became much more affordable with Toyota cutting the price of its Prius range by $5,000 - $7,500 (depending on the model).

Entry to the Prius lineup now starts at $34,990 (that’s $5,000 less than the just-launched Lexus CT 200h).

Toyota says the price cuts result from burgeoning global sales for its stylish hybrid, but we’re certain increased competition might have had something to do with it.

Prius sales in Japan have grown by more than 51 per cent in the last 12 months – 315,669 sales in 2010 – and several new variants (Prius+, Prius v wagon and Prius c) have appeared at recent international motor shows.

“The more popular hybrid cars become, the more affordable their prices, and, therefore, the greater the impact on the environment,” explained Toyota Australia’s David Buttner.

The full range sees Prius priced from $34,990 to $44,590.
