Toyota will commence manufacturing new generation engines for its Camry and Hybrid Camry models at its Altona plant in 2012.
The decision injects $300 million into the Australian manufacturing sector and has been supported by the Federal Government’s Green Car Innovation Fund and the Victorian Government.
Toyota says the new fuel-efficient and environmentally sustainable engines could provide significant export opportunities to Toyota plants in ASEAN countries which also produce Camry and Hybrid Camry.
Toyota Australia has been producing engines in Australia since 1978 and was the first Toyota company outside Japan to include engine manufacturing.
“Toyota operations around the world are constantly vying for new investment to ensure local manufacturing operations can participate in the global car making industry,” explained Toyota Australia President and CEO, Max Yasuda. “Securing the investment to produce the next generation engine is a huge vote of confidence for our local manufacturing plant and our employees, who have worked tirelessly to improve operational performance to demonstrate our ability to compete with Asia pacific counterparts.”
