Typical family motorists who purchase Toyota's new Hybrid Camry can expect to save around 1100 litres of fuel per year (around $1320).
Toyota says those figures are calculated on the average annual driving distance of 20,000 kms. Typical fleet and commercial drivers - who cover many more kilometers each year - will save even more on their fuel bill.
The Hybrid Camry goes on-sale nationally next February.
'By driving Hybrid Camry, the savings on fuel and therefore on people's wallets will be huge - and there is also a significant environmental benefit,' revealed Toyota's Corporate Manager of Product Planning, Mr Peter Evans. 'Looking at the combination of city and highway driving, we are confident of recording fuel economy in the low 6.0 litres per 100kms range.'
Testing by Toyota's engineers points to the 2.4-litre petrol/electric Hybrid Camry producing power of at least 140kW, but returning fuel economy figures comparable to a smaller 1.3-litre vehicle.
The company calculates the Hybrid Camry will be some 40 per cent more fuel efficient than rival Australian six cylinder sedans.
