Workers at Toyota’s Altona, Victoria manufacturing plant applauded the production of the 1.5-millionth Camry on 15 April. Fittingly, the vehicle was a Hybrid – the high-tech, fuel-sipping Camry that is a real credit to Toyota.
First manufactured in Australia in 1987, the Camry has for the past 16 years been Australia’s best-selling mid-size car. Australia was the first country outside Japan to manufacture Camry.
From 1996, the Middle East has been the biggest market for locally manufactured versions with almost 800,000 Camrys shipped from Melbourne.
Globally, the Camry has been one of the world’s most successful cars with sales exceeding 12 million.
