Toyota – 2.5 Million Hybrids And Counting

Global sales of hybrid-power Toyota vehicles now average 2,000 vehicles per day and the Japanese giant has sold more than 2.5 million hybrids.

Toyota Prius 1.8 million sales make it the world’s most popular petrol-electric hybrid vehicle – 15,000 of those have been sold in Australia. The Hybrid Camry, now manufactured in China, North America and Australia, has racked-up 200,000 sales with more than 2,000 on the road in Australia.

While confirming Toyota’s hybrid practicality and sales success, David Buttner, Toyota Australia’s Senior Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, landed a subtle dig to some rival brands and start-up systems currently attracting publicity and searching for Government subsidies.

“Even in the future, Toyota’s hybrid cars will continue to enable owners to drive long distances without requiring expensive charging or battery-swap infrastructure,” Mr Buttner said. “Toyota is testing a range of future technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, plug-in hybrid systems and battery electric vehicles, but these are not yet ready for the market.”

And while many brands are now launching hybrid technologies – including Porsche and Ferrari - there’s no doubt Toyota has the runs on the board and its Hybrid Synergy Drive offers the most practical sustainable mobility solution for mainstream car buyers.
