Suzuki will unveil a hybrid electric version of its Swift compact hatchback at the Tokyo Motor Show.
Designed for city driving, the Suzuki Swift EV uses a petrol engine exclusively for re-charging its battery (which is smaller than the batteries used in plug-in EVs – hence it’s quicker to re-charge).
Suzuki says city-based drivers in Japan typically cover less than 30kms daily and the Swift EV can cover that distance on zero-emissions pure electric power.
But when covering great distances, battery charge is provided by the petrol engine generator which doesn’t drive the wheels.
More details will come from Suzuki at the Tokyo Motor Show.
