It was coupe time for Nissan at the Tokyo Motor Show with the covers coming off the IDx ‘Freeflow’ and IDx ‘NISMO.
Nissan says creation of the newcomers took feedback from ‘Digital Natives’ (the generation born after 1990). That input pointed to simplicity, a ‘flexible box’ differentiating engine, passenger and cargo areas.
Customization was paramount as was simplicity and functionality. The four-passenger coupes run so-called no-nonsense interiors with straight-forward instrumentation, simple, round steering wheels and seats trimmed in denim.
Even the exterior colour (light brown) reflects the ‘white t-shirt and khaki chinos’ set although this is somewhat offset by the 18-inch alloy wheels.
The NISMO version heads in a sporty direction with side exhausts, an aero kit and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside the Spartan race-inspired interior are crimson alcantara seats and bright red suede trim.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre engine driving via a six-speed CVT.
Some have suggested the IDx could point to a replacement for Nissan’s 200SX sporty coupe. Maybe so and the ‘back-to-basics’ approach does reflect the original 200SX DNA.
