The logic of solar-powered electricity generation for cars is so obvious but it has taken BMW to develop the first Solar ‘Carport’ to coincide with the launch if the i3 and i8 models.
Designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA, the solar carport combines advanced technology to harness the sun’s rays for conversion to electricity and a hip design appropriate for a product wearing the ‘BMW I’ logo.
Bamboo, a particularly sustainable raw material (because of its rapid growth), blends with carbon elements to form the structure and translucent glass-on-glass solar modules are used to generate electricity.
BMW will offer a 30-year warranty on the solar panels for European customers.
