But….we can’t. Yet.
In the utterly looney world of Mercedes-AMG, the new line-up of A family of cars are now topped off by the new 45 series. Earlier on the Affalterbach-based tuners revealed the A 45 and CLA 45, both all-wheel driven nutters that derive thrust from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder.
All seems sensible until one realises just how much power AMG expects these engines to produce as much as 310kW and 500Nm in the 45 S configuration, declarable as the world’s most powerful four-cylinder in a series production car and a contender for the highest specific output passenger car engine. Good thing it’s handmade by a single master technician, just like other AMG engines.
This AMG CLA 45 Shooting Brake is none too different than the previous duo unveiled. It’s based on the same platform, drives very much alike, and is endowed with performance that would give high end sports cars a good scare - like 4.0-seconds-flat-to-100km/h-level quick.
The Shooting Brake, though, adds a wagon-esque body style, boosting cargo room significantly, and boasts improved headroom for second-row occupants. It’s the CLA you’d want for trips to IKEA and to ferry around small to medium-sized family dogs. And in our opinion, it’s also worth getting over the saloon simply because it looks that much better.
“The new CLA 45 Shooting Brake is already the third model of our completely new Performance compact cars portfolio and demonstrates that we have a range tailored to all types of individual wishes. The driving dynamics and the sporty product experience are on a level which was previously unimaginable in the compact class,”
Our Shooting Brake additionally offers a pronounced degree of practical utility value, which its expressive design idiom brings across with plenty of lifestyle appeal,” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
Just like the other smaller AMGs, the CLA Shooting Brake includes a Drift Mode to make full use of the car’s all-wheel drive system and immense power reserves, allowing you to spin and smoke all four wheels for spectacular, albeit computer-engineered power slides.
Sadly, Mercedes-Benz Australia have already confirmed that the Shooting Brake will not be making its way to Australian shores, at least as the plans stand today. When the new generation of uber versions of the A family do make landfall, it will be with the range-topping A 45 S and CLA 45 S.
