A definite sign of the changing times is Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s preferred method of communicating product unveilings. Of course, the usual train of official invites and press releases do follow, but more typically are preceded by a tweet.

This time, Mr Musk’s 140 character blast announced that a Tesla product unveil is due to take place a week from now on October 17th and notes that it is ‘unexpected by most’. We’re not quite sure what to make of that ‘most’ since there’s only a handful of things that someone might be able to point to as semi-obvious products from the Californian EV maker.

A favourite guess among the motoring media would be, unsurprisingly, a new EV. Specifically, the fourth model in what will constitute their contemporary line-up: the Model Y. This will likely take the form of an less expensive SUV to complement the Model X in much the same way the Model S is to the upcoming Model 3.

This would certainly match the “big” announcement that Musk had promised to follow-up Tesla’s newest sedan following, again, a tweet earlier this year. The introduction or preview of an all-new model would certainly qualify as an appropriately significant event.

Following whatever is to come of the October 17th event, though, is the unveiling of some new products that have spawned forth from the EV maker’s takeover with solar panel company SolarCity, which is slated to take place on October 28th.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Tesla has planned for the 17th. Speaking of which, even if the Model Y will be previewed then, it will most likely start production a few months or a year after the first Model 3s roll off the assembly line.
