Tesla has recently revealed the Aussie price of a new base-level variant of its falcon-winged SUV following the international debut of the Model X 60D, coming in at $111,900, or $122,812 if you include Luxury Car Tax.

Just as the previous entry Model X, the new all-wheel drive 60D comes pretty much as it did as the 75D, with those two numbers denoting the amount of charge capacity its batteries could hold – and by consequence the quoted distance that the car can cover before requiring a recharge.

The Model X’s appeal, of course, boils down to its status as a fully electric vehicle, boosted by its high levels of standard on-board technology and equipment, and to some subjective extent, it’s falcon wing rear doors. All this together should, for the right buyer, be more than enough to sway him or her from the typical BMW X5, Range Rover, or Lexus RX in its mid-tier spec levels.

Armed with two electric motors – designated by the ‘D’ in the name – which each driving one axle, the Model X produces a combined output of 241kW and 525Nm of torque with a range exceeding 350km, so Tesla says.

Even at 60kWh, the new base SUV can still reach 100km/h from rest in 6.2 seconds and manage a 210km/h top speed, the same figures that the more expensive and larger-capacity 75kWh variant.

Between the Model X 75D that it replaces at the base of Tesla’s SUV offering, the new 60D obviously can’t travel as far. Tesla has pulled a move like this before with their Model S 60 which replaced the Model S 75. With that, the 60kWh Model S can manage a quoted 322km in range compared to the 75’s 381km. And as we have explained before, there is no difference between the battery used in the 75 and the 60 (nor the Model X 60D and 75D) besides the fact that Tesla limits the latter’s battery to a 60kWh capacity via software.

Again, that may seem like an unconventional way to separate their variants since there is nothing physically limiting the Model S 60 from travelling the same 381km as the Model S 75, but we feel that surrendering 59km of range for a cheaper entry point for a full electric  car – or in this case, an SUV.

Full details and price for the entire range of Model X variants will be made available as the Model X approaches its local launch date, and so too will the price and spew of optional extras.
