Tesla CEO Elon Musk said today that with a software update next month, the Model S P100D will be able to manage the 0-100km/h dash in just 2.4 seconds. To put that into perspective, the McLaren P1 hypercar (which has a V8 behind the driver, we should add) does that same sprint in 2.8 seconds.
As it stands, the P100D already shames most supercars with the current standard set at 2.5sec to hit the 100km/h mark, in a 5(+2) sedan. Ouch. The update, which Musk announced via Twitter, also mentioned that the Model X 100D would get a similar improvement, taking one-tenths of a second off its 0-100km/h time and knocking it down to 2.8secs.
US customers waiting for their P90Ds can upgrade to P100Ds for an additional US$10,000, while existing owners can upgrade for US$20,000. The 100D comes with Ludicrous Mode built into the in-car software, and the ludicrous sprint times are achievable only with it activated.
Musk has said that all the performance boosts are put on existing drivetrain setups, meaning that all the extra twist is down to the new 100kWh battery packs. With the new batteries, the Model S 100D has a claimed range of 315mi under EPA testing, and 381 under NEDC testing. The Model X gets a lower 289mi under the EPA, with 336mi under NEDC.
