Although it’s not sold in Australia, Fiat’s technological masterpiece, the two-cylinder, 0.9-litre TwinAir (powering the Fiat 500 in Europe) has been awarded in Britain’s Business Car Fleet Technology Awards.

2011 FIAT 500

Fiat says the two-cylinder Fiat 500 is the world’s most economical petrol-powered car with combined cycle consumption rated at just 4.10l/100km/h and at 95g/km for C02 it’s also the cleanest of any mass volume petrol powerplant

The fuel-frugal version of the cute Fiat 500 still delivers zero to 100km/h in 11 seconds – that’s faster than Honda’s Civic hybrid.

No wonder this great piece of Italian engineering is the 2011 International Engine Of The Year.

Locally the wonderful Fiat 500 is sold in its ‘hot hatch’ guise with a choice of naturally-aspirated and turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engines.
