Toyota will preview its funky FJ Cruiser SUV at the Australian International Motor Show (Sydney) from 15 October.
The tough, retro-style FJ Cruiser is scheduled to go on-sale in the first quarter of next year. It joins the boxy Rukus hatchback in throwing Toyota’s traditionally conservative styling methods into the bin.
FJ Cruiser is a throwback to the legendary FJ40 Toyota LandCruiser from 50 years ago – right down to the three windscreen wipers, rugged headlight style, white roof, wraparound rear windows and near vertical windscreen. It will be the only Toyota vehicle to spell the name T-O-Y-O-T-A across the front grille in place of the normal badge.
Despite its retro looks, the new FJ Cruiser is high-tech and modern – the four-doors provide access to seats for five with the rear doors opening backwards.
FJ Cruiser will also be equipped for severe off-road work thanks to its body-on-frame chassis, dual-range 4WD, high ground clearance and substantial suspension travel.
“FJ Cruiser has loads of character that isn’t found in any other SUV, let alone one that is built for off-road terrain,” explained Toyota’s Senior Executive Director Sales and Marketing, David Buttner. “It will be a lot of fun to own and drive, satisfying those who want a modern vehicle with the boulder-crawling spirit of Toyota’s legendary off-roaders.”
