“Yes, yes, yes!” was the collective response from Subaru fans to the WRX concept car rolled-out at the New York International Auto Show.

Much more sporty than the current model, the good news is Subaru says the New York concept does point to the next generation WRX.

Lower and wider, the Subaru WRX concept debuts and aggressive front-end with the hallmark Subaru grille in a 3D mesh pattern and piercing hawk-eye headlights.

There’s also the hallmark WRX bonnet scoop but the New York concept adds a large cool air duct at the front, wing ducts and bold front wheel arches.

Rear wheel arches are generously flared as well while the bottled scores a massive curve which integrates a spoiler. The rear also sees and aero bumper and diffuser.

Wheels are BBS RI-D in one-piece forged Duralumin with 245/40Z R20 Dunlop tyres.

WRX enthusiasts will also notice a slightly different version of the hallmark blue paint – called ‘WR Blue Pearl 111’. But the characteristic fluorescent yellow highlights continue – on the exhaust finisher, brake callipers ands WRX badges.

Weight is claimed to be significantly down thanks to major efforts which include a carbon-fibre roof.

That lighter weight combined with a lower centre of gravity should ensure even sharper driving dynamics.

No word yet on production plans but we suspect Subaru may have something brewing for the Tokyo Motor Show later this year.
