The Subaru WRX STI one of those cars that you can point to immediately when the Japanese automaker comes up in thought or conversation.

For those who want an additional shot of ostentation, customers can choose the STI Style package which adds the usual array of aggressive shiny bits. And for more purchase on the road, the STI Performance package is also on the options list over the factory stock WRX.

For some, the standard WRX is too far south of the mark, and so Subaru has brought out this: the limited edition S4 tS. It’s full model designation actually reads longer, adding “by STI”. That’s telling, as it bridges the gap between the full fat STI variant and the relative normalcy of the WRX.

But there are apparently buyers who want the loutish impression that a car like that (with the requisite gold alloys and blue paint, likely) but without the hassle of having to shift gears themselves or, heaven forbid, that granite-like suspension setup.

This must be a market that Subaru finds only exists in Japan as the WRX S4 tS will be sold exclusively in its home market.

It also adds heavier duty springs and dampers, a more aggressive all-wheel drive tune, but keeps the CVT shifter. Basically, the STI division has gone through much of the standard WRX but held it back by way of skipping the six-speed manual.

Under the bonnet we find Subaru’s 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four Boxer but this limited run model’s power and response has been tweaked through a modified intake and exhaust system. Official figures stand at 220kW/400Nm, awfully close to the larger-engined STI, and Subaru say that acceleration has been improved by 10 percent. An oil cooler has also been fitted to cater for the CVT as well.

Other upgraded components include adjustable Bilstein DampMatic II front dampers, a strut-tower brace, Brembo four-piston brakes, forged aluminium 19-inch BBS wheels, a more menacing front and rear end aero treatment, red exterior accents, that massive fixed rear wing, red interior accents, Recaro bucket seats, and torque vectoring for its all-wheel drive system.

We feel a little differently about the Subaru WRX S4 tS but also a little familiar with it as we’re collectively (as a market) no stranger to tS branded offerings. There may not be that many customers at this corner of the Earth with those specific needs - demanding a bridge between the WRX and WRX STI - but perhaps individual bits seen here would appeal to WRX owners.
