There’s no way the Porsche 911 R won’t go down in history as a milestone car for the Zuffenhausen automaker. With its 373kW naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine propelling a supremely focused lightweight (1,370kg) sports car, it has been garnering applause the world over.
Naturally, it does cost an arm and a leg. And you’re likely to never even see one let alone find one on the used market. But this 911 R is different. Painted in Slate Grey, this special example is inspired by actor, racer, and all-round cool guy Steve McQueen.
Oh, and it will be going up for auction by RM Sotheby’s in February.
It’s only one of a handful of 911 R’s that have been optioned with the Paint to Sample (PTS) box ticked with the exterior colour contrasted by the silver stripes running down its hood and the yellow ‘Porsche’ decals along the side and door panels.
The interior has been adorned with racing bucket seats that have houndstooth inserts. And the doorsills have a choice quote by McQueen himself, saying “Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.”
The car is sure to fetch a very high price when it goes under the gavel in two months in Place Vauban in Paris, but 25 percent of that will be headed towards funding research to cure cancer in children in cooperation with the Gustave Roussy foundation.
