Mercedes-Benz chose an international dealer conference in Davos, Switzerland to announce its Smart brand will commence production of its ‘Escooter’.
“With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future,” revealed Mercedes-Benz sales and marketing chief, Dr Joachim Schmidt.
The Ebike and Escooter were unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show which use versions of he electric drive system fitted to the Smart fortwo coupe and convertible.
While the Smart fortwo electric drive system will debut within a few months, ‘Benz says the Smart Escooter will undergo some design honing before its debut in production form within the next two years.
Eco-friendly for sure, but it’s also clever marketing. Like the Ebike, youngsters can operate the Escooter prior to the legal driving age – providing a ready ‘pool’ of potential buyers for future Smart passenger car buyers.
The Smart Ebike has already won a major award – a Red Dot international design award.
