Skoda, Volkswagen’s Czech Republic brand, has added to its Australian lineup with the launch of the highly-praised Fabia compact hatchback. A close relative to the excellent Volkswagen Polo, the Skoda Fabia is available in two model grades – the standard version priced at $18,990 and the sporty Monte Carlo at $21,990.

Both are powered by a ripper turbocharged 1.2-litre, four0cylinder engine which delivers 77kW/175Nm and drives through a five-speed manual transmission. From next year, other engines will join the lineup, as well as an available DSG automatic transmission and further models – including the racy RS and a wagon.

As you would expect from a Volkswagen subsidiary, notwithstanding its sharp pricing, the Skoda Fabia bristles with safety and driver aids such as electronic stability control and electrohydraulic power steering.

Family buyers will appreciate the relatively high seating positions and handy 315-litres if luggage space.

Styling is distinctly Skoda, highlighted by the hallmark front grille. On the options list are contrasting roof colours a theme which is catching on with many new automotive designs.

The sporty Monte Carlo (cue Skoda’s World Rally Championship team) gains full-length piano black body trim, black roof, black mirrors, smoked headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Inside is the usual stylish interior we’re accustomed to from Volkswagen Group products, including the dashboard gear selector light which encourages fuel-efficient driving by advising when is the best time to swap cogs. Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo gets sports seats in either black or black-and-red with contrasting stitching and alloy sports pedals.
