Skoda Previews All-New Kodiaq In Sketches

Skoda has released a couple of sketches that show off the design of their new large SUV, the Kodiaq, ahead of its planned world premiere this coming September. It will reportedly be built on Volkswagen’s modular MQB platform that’s used in the new Tiguan.

Honestly, by this point we were expecting more along the lines of actual photographs instead of drawings, but Skoda’s head of design Josef Kaban wanted to elaborate on the ‘striking design language’ that’s been applied to the upcoming Kodiaq SUV and how the visual cohesion will possibly play a role in the other models in their range.

From what we can glean from these sketches, it’s clear that the Kodiaq is characterised by its very defined and angular lines, giving it a strong presence and somewhat masking its robust size to still appear sporty. An example would be its short overhangs and long wheelbase, which each contribute to a more dynamic stance and a spacious cabin. It is also clear that the Kodiaq does indeed strongly resemble Skoda’s Vision S concept (pictured below).

This is an homage to the crystal glass art that the Czech culture is known for, and is further embodied in the raked headlamps. The LED rear lights are also angular and incorporates the C-shape design Skoda has used before and works as an endpoint for the sharp lines that run down the Kodiaq’s side and which started with its contrastingly rounded bonnet shape.

Skoda did not release a sketch of the Kodiaq’s interior, unfortunately, but did mention that it “continues the striking design of the exterior” with its crystalline features. It is designed to be calming for all occupants, but peppered with strong vertical elements such as on the air vents.

They also detail a split instrument panel comprising of a large display, one angled towards the driver and the other to passengers, which to us sounds a lot like the new E-Class’ dashboard or the Vision S concept's 3 screen layout, and a very big step in interior tech ambition from Skoda.

‘Kodiaq’ Confirmed As Skoda’s Upcoming Large SUV's Name

On the specific design language of a large SUV, design chief Josef Kaban said: The ŠKODA Kodiaq is a pioneer for our brand in two respects. We are entering a new segment with our first large SUV above the Yeti. And at the same time, the Kodiaq is the first model with the new ŠKODA SUV design language. It is powerful and emotive, but also timeless.”

Kaban continued: “The ŠKODA Kodiaq is extremely versatile. It is exceptionally spacious and with compact external dimensions, it delivers the best overall package in its class. It is also robust, suits all types of terrain and offers the best flexibility and functionality. We wanted to visualise this in the exterior design as well as the interior. Form and functionality are therefore in harmony in the ŠKODA Kodiaq. The crystalline and striking appearance also underlines the strength and character of the ŠKODA Kodiaq.”
