North-America’s Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has released it hybrid vehicle scorecard and Toyota’s Prius was awarded the highest rating of non-luxury vehicles.
In fact, the UCS study determined Toyota’s hybrid Prius delivers a reduction in global warming pollution of more than 40 per cent compared to its most direct rivals.
The UCS hybrid scorecard evaluated 34 hybrid vehicles for fuel efficiency, environmental improvement and consumer value. Founded in 1969, the UCS is a science-based non-profit organization established to promote a healthy environment and a safer world.
According to the UCS, while automotive companies are now using hybrid technology to boost fuel economy and reduce pollution without making cars too expensive, many have yet to deliver the full benefits of the technology as they emphasise engine power over fuel efficiency.
In Australia, Toyota offers both Prius (fuel consumption 3.9l/100kms) and hybrid Camry (fuel consumption 6.0l/100kms) and both are five-star rated by the Federal Government’s Green Vehicle Guide.
