This is how ‘economies of scale’ works.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance Set 2022 Goals

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has announced today that over the next six years, they will be refining the operations and development of cars beneath the Alliance umbrella, and push investments towards developing itself as an operator of an autonomous ride-hailing service. Further, the company has reiterated its commitment to new mobility further, announcing that it will be bringing no less than 12 fully-electric vehicles to market over the next 6-years, but it will introduce no less than 40-vehicles with autonomous driving technology.

Chairman and chief executive of the Alliance, Carlon Ghosn, had much to say about what’s being dubbed as ‘Alliance 2022’:

Renault-Nissan Alliance Pushing For Expansion Down Under
“Today marks a new milestone for our member companies. By the end of our strategic plan Alliance 2022, we aim to double our annual synergies to €10 billion ($15-billion). To achieve this target, on one side Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors will accelerate collaboration on common platforms, powertrains and next-generation electric, autonomous and connected technologies. From the other side, synergies will be enhanced by our growing scale. Our total annual sales are forecast to exceed 14 million units, generating revenues expected at US$240 billion ($300-billion) by the end of the plan.” — Carlos Ghosn, Chairman & Chief Executive, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance

Alliance 2022 will also see the three companies under the alliance (Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi) further the use of common platforms, with some 9-million units planned to be sold utilising just 4 common platforms. This way, the use of common powertrains will also account for 75% of total sales, utilising just 22 of the 31 engines presently available and employed by the Alliance and its various products.

Come 2022, the Alliance expects to have no less than twelve new zero-emissions electric vehicles, thanks to a major planned expansion in the shared electric vehicle technologies under the Alliance umbrella, which also encompass the development and deployment of advanced autonomous driving systems, vehicle connectivity systems, and new mobility services.

“This plan will boost the growth and profitability of our member companies. We intend to deliver on growing synergies, with three autonomous companies cooperating with the efficiency of one. The Alliance has grown and performed with two members since 1999. With Alliance 2022, we will prove that we will grow and perform with three companies or more.” — Carlos Ghosn, Chairman & Chief Executive, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance

To further underline this strong direction change, the Alliance saw fit to even change its logo, which also serves to cement the love-triangle between Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Renault. Should Alliance 2022 come to fruition, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance will likely maintain its dominance as the worlds’ most successful and widest-reaching electric mobility company, and with that, they stand a very strong chance of dominating the nascent world of autonomous e-hailing services too.
