French automaker Renault is known for their ability to produce some of the most fun and dynamically endowed small and sporty hatchbacks in the industry, and now for 2016 they’ve given the Clio RS more to compel buyers.
“The new Clio R.S. offers the full spectrum of Renault Sport technology for immediate driving pleasure. At launch, each customer will be able to choose from three types of chassis and two power outputs. The model also inaugurates the highly efficient and innovative R.S. VISION lighting system, Renault Sport’s exclusive lighting signature,” announced Patrice Ratti, CEO, Renault Sport Cars.
There are subtle but noticeable changes to the Clio RS’ exterior, with a new front bumper design that gives the car a broader look head-on. Also new are the new LED fog lamps that are shaped to look like a stylised chequered flag they call R.S Vision. A new set of optional 18-inch wheels replace the previous car’s alloy design, which also correspond with the car’s specific side sills.
For those selecting the more performance-focused Trophy line over the Sport or Cup chassis will get a boost in power to 164kW (versus 149kW originally) from the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as well as an optional Akrapovič exhaust system, lowered suspension (20mm front, 10mm rear).
The middle ground in the Clio RS range would be those fitted with the Cup chassis, tuned to give a firmer ride but more responsive handling characteristics. 18-inch wheels are standard on the Cup and Trophy variants.
As before, all versions of the 2016 Renault Clio RS will have its shifting duties handled by Renault’s six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles.
There’s no official indication as of yet when these new versions of the Clio RS will hit Australian shores, but as first European deliveries are slated to begin in either late September to October, Q4 2016 should be when we can expect its Oz arrival.
When it does, and as before, it will take on the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST, Volkswagen Polo GTI, and Peugeot 208 GTi.
