Renault Australia has announced that it will now be offering three body styles of their Megane instead of the usual sole hatch, comprising of the familiar five-door hatch and new entrants the Sedan and Wagon.
In broad strokes, the Wagon is very much a more practical mirror of the Hatch, offered with the same petrol engines corresponding trim levels: Zen, GT-Line, and GT. The Sedan, however, is tiered a little differently.
For the Sedan, buyers can choose from the baseline Zen and the higher-specified Intens variant, separating the pair are larger 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, full LED headlights, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) given as standard, adding adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring.
A 1.2-litre turbocharged engine with 97kW and 205Nm propels the first two grades of the Hatch and Wagon along with being the exclusive engine in the Sedan. Meanwhile, a 1.6-litre turbo with 151kW and 280Nm serves the sportier top-end GT Hatch and Wagon, both motors transmit drive to the front wheels via Renault’s seven-speed EDC dual-clutch transmission, which is now standard across the range.
Where equipment is concerned, the Wagon and Hatch are level pegging, the latter now benefitting from a spec bump to accompany its new siblings of the Megane family. Standard are six airbags, hill start assist, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, dusk-sensing automatic headlights, rain-sensing automatic wipers, and an R-LINK2 infotainment system with in-built satellite navigation.
Crucially, though, the hatch comes with the advanced active safety features outlined above, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane departure warning where the Wagon requires a specific optional upgrade or stepping up to the GT-Line.
Naturally, both new body styles offer more practicality than the 5-door hatch with the Wagon now leading the boot space race with 580-litres and the Sedan not far behind at 503-litres. For comparison, the hatch’s seat-up cargo capacity a healthy 435-litres.
The Megane GT, in either Hatch or Wagon form, still comfortably serves the role as sporty range-topper, supplementing its larger engine and more power with Renault’s 4CONTROL all-wheel steering, tuned suspension, and launch control. That is, of course, until the much awaited Megane Renault Sport makes its official showroom debut early next year.
