Prices are down, finance offers are plentiful and new models arrive every week so it’s no surprise Australians are buying news cars like never before.
In June, Australians bought more new cars than for any other month on record – 118,758 which was 5.5 per-cent up on the previous record month (June 2012). And the cumulative total for the first six months of this year of 573,711 vehicles was also the best-ever for six months and placed us firmly on-track to beat 1.1-million sales by 31 December.
And there was also a new record set for the financial year which ended on 30 June – 1.137,889 vehicles.
Once again Toyota is leading the way – sales of 22,160 vehicles in June and 106,110 for the first six months – both of which are greater than the combined totals of the two nearest rivals. Toyota had the best-selling vehicle in nine market segments last month and Australia’s two best-selling models were both Toyotas – Corolla and Hi-Lux.
Holden was number two in June with sales of 10,483 vehicles, ahead of Hyundai (9,914), Ford (9,687), Mazda (9,567) Mitsubishi (9,257) and Nissan (9,165).
Overall year to date, Toyota leads with sales of 106,110 vehicles, ahead of Mazda (52,287), Holden (51,547), Hyundai (47,979), and Ford (44,504).
Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Tony Cramb says the new car industry is the stand-out performer in Australian retailing. “Strong competition, the highest levels of affordability in decades, low interest rates and a relatively strong economy are all pointing to a full-year total of at least 1.1 million sales,” Mr Cramb revealed.
But June 2103 will be remembered as the month the records tumbled, including…
Audi set an all-time monthly record with 1505 sales in June and year-to-date is up by more than 17 per-cent over the same period last year.
Mazda set a new financial year record, selling 104,040 vehicles in the 12 months which ended last Sunday. Mazda CX-5 had its best-ever month in June with sales of 2036 and the BT50 ute logged its best-ever June with 1332 sales.
MINI got into the act – 30 June wrapping-up its best-ever six months with sales of 1295.
And Renault enjoyed its best-ever June with sales of 605 vehicles beating the previous record set in September last year. Year to-date Renault also set a new benchmark with sales of 1,998 vehicles.
