Celebrating 7-decades of British off-road ability.

2018 Range Rover SV Coupe – Teaser

The modern Range Rover may be a masterclass of refinement, distinction, luxury and capability, but every once in a while, a throwback is needed to put into context the gargantuan leaps forward that have been made since it debuted some 50-years ago. And what better reason to pay homage to history than your 70th birthday, in the case of Land Rover?

The venerable British brand has really been around for 7-decades, emerging first with the snatch Land Rover, before defining the luxury SUV segment some 20-years later with the very first Range Rover. The Range Rover debuted as a two-door, as was the norm at the time, before it grew into the four-door luxury barge we know and love today.

“The Range Rover SV Coupé is a highly-compelling design, with peerless refinement and uncompromised sophistication from its breathtaking exterior proportions to its sumptuous, beautifully-appointed interior. This is a vehicle that will resonate on an emotional level.” — Gerry McGovern, Chief Design Officer, Land Rover

Land Rover says that the SV Coupé is “a celebration of the Range Rover bloodline,” and promises to marry traditional skills and craftsmanship to thoroughly modern and contemporary technology and features. We have little doubt that, using the present-day Range Rover as a template, the SV Coupé will do just that, likely featuring the new dual-screen infotainment system that wowed us first on the Range Rover Velar, which is itself an homage to the original Range Rover (prototypes were called ‘Velar’ or ‘veiled’ to confuse onlookers during the development and testing phases).

“Land Rover created the luxury SUV sector with Range Rover almost 50 years ago. In launching the new Range Rover SV Coupé, we will offer clients an alluring combination of peerless luxury and rarity. Unveiling this special vehicle at Geneva International Motor Show in March, during Land Rover’s 70th Anniversary year, will be a defining moment for Land Rover, the Range Rover portfolio and Special Vehicle Operations.” — John Edwards, Managing Director, Land Rover Special Operations

The SV Coupé is no concept though: This two-door modern Range Rover will be hand-built in the SV Technical Centre in Warwickshire, and will be made in 999 examples. It will be the world’s first full-size luxury SUV coupé (they claim), and will mark a “dramatic and desirable” addition to the bustling Range Rover portfolio.

One for the collectors, then.
