PSA’s 1.2-litre PureTech Wins At Engine Of The Year Awards

For the second consecutive time the PSA Group has produced a winning little engine, recognised as the best in its “1-litre to 1.4-litre” category at the 18th International Engine of the Year Awards.

The 1.2-litre PureTech is a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that has a impressive amount of technology packed into it has has 120 patents to its credit. All this nerdy measures amounts to real world fuel economy and a carbon emissions footprint that is remarkably low.

PSA, the Group behind the Peugeot and Citroen brands, says that it cuts CO2 by 18% compared to its four-cylinder petrol predecessor while fuel economy numbers are even more impressive, holding two records.

The first was taken in Europe in 2014 where car fitted with this engine and a manual transmission and the second was achieved in China earlier in 2016 where an automatic model travelled 1,878km on a single tank with a record breaking 2.93-litres/100km.

Manufactured in Douvrin, France, the 1.2-litre PureTech produces either 82kW or 97kW, depending on tune, and 230Nm. Very healthy numbers from such a small displacement, and early torque delivery for low speed responsiveness.

Commenting on the award, Christian Chapelle, Vice-President, Powertrain and Chassis Engineering, PSA Group, said: "Receiving this award for the second year in a row is a testament to our technological expertise and efforts to optimise our engines and reduce their environmental footprint while at the same time delivering high-quality performance."

In Australia, buyers will be able to find the engine under the bonnets of such cars as the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 308, and in Citroen C4 Cactus. Soon, however, the recently announced Peugeot 3008 will also be another recipient. PSA will be increasing production capacity at their Douvrin plant and plans to output 670,000 engines by 2018.
