New 3008s with autonomous-driving hardware to ply the city-state’s streets.
Groupe PSA, now the second-largest carmaker in the world, is now cooperating with nuTonomy, a firm described as the leading developer in software for autonomous vehicles. With this partnership, nuTonomy will be outfitting a fleet of Peugeot 3008 SUVs with their software, for on-road, real-world testing of its capabilities on the roads of Singapore.
The first phase of the partnership will see nuTonomy installing its software on 3008’s that have been customised and altered by PSA’s in-house innovation team. The firm expects to complete this phase soon, with testing to begin in September.
Should the first phase of testing go well, the two companies could expand their testing to other major cities worldwide. Seamless integration of autonomous-driving software into existing vehicle hardware is a crucial step toward getting more autonomous vehicles (AV) on the road. The partnership between nuTonomy and Groupe PSA provides an opportunity for both the carmaker and the software engineers to take a gauge on the performance other respective systems, how users and riders interact with the vehicles, and monitor the end-to-end user experience.
The partnership falls under PSA’s “Autonomous Vehicles for All” initiative, which intends to bring to market AV’s and on-demand mobility solutions. nuTonomy has been testing autonomous vehicles in an area called ‘one-north’ in Singapore, which has served as a test bed for its software, designated by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority as an AV-testing zone. nuTonomy also tests its cars on public roads in Boston.
