When Emmanuel Macron was announced as the new French president, we have little doubt in our minds that he began preparations for his inauguration soon after. He likely spent hours fussing over the suit, the tie, the right pair of shoes… and probably even his chariot of choice. Luckily for him, Citroen’s luxury offshoot DS had a car ready for him: A personalised DS7 Crossback.

Still some way away from its market launch, the DS7 Crossback that the French president rode in on is hardly a production model. The ‘Presidential DS7 Crossback’ is not only the very first of its kind of the road, but it’s also unique in several respects. The car is finished in a very rich ‘Ink Blue,’ and sees fitment of a custom-made opening fabric roof (allowing the French president to greet crowds as he rolls past). The Presidential DS also features unique French Republic signature badging, as well as the requisite flag holder for the Tricoloure.

The cabin, dubbed ‘Black Art,’ sees revisions by French ateliers Maury, and features ‘FR’ (for ‘French Republic’) embellishments on the central stack, along with other golden features around the cabin. Even the wheels get a gold treatment, with DS calling them “attention-to-detail” finishes. The Presidential DS7 Crossback features things like DS Connected Pilot (DS’ semi-autonomous driving tech), and DS Active Scan suspension (which reads the road ahead and prepares the suspension for the surface).

DS vehicles have served several French presidents in the past, starting with General Charles de Gaulle in the 60s, then going on to transport Claude Pompidou in the 70s, Giscard d’Estaing, François Mitterrand, and Jacques Chirac. Outgoing president François Hollande also favoured DS, with the DS5 serving him unwaveringly throughout his time in office. The DS7 Crossback should suit the new French president well, with its unique, distinctive, and youthful charm likely to gel well with France’s youngest president since Napoleon.
