At the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium in the Austrian capital, Porsche took the wraps off their new-generation of V8 powerplants that’s due to replace the current crop of high-output petrol burners in the Cayenne and Panamera.

Augmented by two twin-scroll turbochargers, the new purported 4.0-litre engine has a quoted output of 404kW and 700Nm, but we imagine the potential reserve to be quite high once Porsche has had time to coax the most out of it.

Going off of the initial numbers, it is a definite improvement over the current 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8 with more power while meeting Porsche’s own “ambitious” efficiency goals.

Actually, the engine displacement of 4.0-litres isn’t yet confirmed, as is the case with much else about the new engine apart from that initial power and torque figure. There’s some talk of it being based off of the 3.0-litre V6 found in Audis such as the S4 which, if you do the math, would amount to 4.0-litres with the addition of two volumetrically identical cylinders.

It’s also possible that the new V8 has a future in other cars in the Volkswagen Group umbrella such as VW’s 3.0-litre TDI engine has seen action across multiple brands.

With the future crop of Panameras and Cayennes being powered by the new twin-turbo V8 pretty much a foregone conclusion, the new engine’s appearance in the next-generation of powerful SUV or luxury saloons from Audi or even Volkswagen with the upcoming Touareg.

The possibility of it also being called to action in other high end brands under the VW clan also exists, such as in future Bentleys or even in Lamborghini’s future SUV, the Urus.
