“A vehicle like this has never existed before.”
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is a very special occasion, perhaps the most prestigious motoring gala event in North America, so it’s not uncommon for carmakers to really go the whole hog and come up with something special for the event. Porsche is no exception, with the concours event set to play host to the unveiling of something called the ‘Project Gold.’
Porsche has not been bashful in its promotion of the new car, which has been described as a resto-mod project by Stuttgart’s skunkworks, Porsche Classic. The name alludes to one of the cars’ themes: Gold. While the car’s exterior has only been shown in an unpainted, raw-metal form, we expect to see a gold-on-black colour scheme, as alluded to by the similarly-toned ‘Turbo’ badging.
The cabin also features the same theme, with black upholstery peppered with gold highlights, like embroidered ‘Turbo’ script on the headrests. Additionally, Porsche has with this latest teaser confirmed the powerplant for the Project Gold: The 3.6-litre twin-turbo flat-six engine, from the 993-generation, will be used here, but it’ll be built from scratch by Porsche Classic. Output is rated at a heady 331kW, which will be more than enough for this one-off.
Actually, we’re not sure if it’ll be a one-off. Porsche Classic’s said that the Project Gold has been some 18-months in the making, but they haven’t talked about the production run for it. They only went as far as to say that “a vehicle like this has never existed before,” which is fabulous, but doesn’t answer the damned question.
In any case, the veil will be lifted off the Porsche Project Gold when the Pebble Beach Car Week begins on the 24th, so stay tuned to CarShowroom as we bring you more updates as they come.
