Porsche has unveiled their updated 911 GTS at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, which in addition to a bunch of other more subtle mechanical goodies, brings it into the new 991.2-generation’s fully-turbocharged line of engines.

For the uninitiated, the GTS moniker denotes a 911 that’s quicker and more capable than the more common Carrera or Carrera S, not as insanely accelerative as the Turbo, but not as hardcore as the quite extensively altered GT3 and GT3 RS either.

Previously, the GTS featured an uprated version of the 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six of the original Type-991 Porsche 911. In keeping with that, the newer turbocharged 3.0-litre flat six introduced in the Carreras are more powerful in this GTS, with peak power being 331kW and 550Nm  - a 20kW/110Nm improvement.

Apart from new force-inducted engine, the GTS recipe has remained pretty much untouched. Save for the visual markers at the rear such as the black cooling strip that sits just atop the engine bay, altered rear spoiler, new front bumper, and 20-inch silk-gloss black wheels with central locking device. Buyers will get the option of a seven-speed manual or seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

Zuffenhausen has actually released multiple versions of the GTS to fit all manner of 911 variants already on sale. For example, if you wanted a 911 Carrera 4 coupe but fancied more power and sharper dynamics, Porsche can sell you a 911 Carrera 4 GTS.

In that guise, with the added grunt and all-wheel drive grip, also happens to be the most accelerative GTS, able to dispatch the 100km/h sprint in 3.6 seconds. The GTS is also available as a Cabriolet and Targa in addition to coming in either rear- or all-wheel drive.

All GTS models come with the Sport Chromo Package as standard along with the Porsche Track Precision app that features automatic recording, detailed display as well as analysis of the car’s cumulative driving data via a smartphone.

There’s also electrically-adjustable Alcantara Sports seat Plus that have GTS logos on the headrests. More Alcantara can be found on the steering wheel, centre console, and armrests. Brushed, black anodised aluminium trim strips along the instrument cluster round it out.
