German sports car giant Porsche has confirmed an all-new SUV, called the Macan, will expand its model lineup from 2013 and will be built at its main plant in Leipzig, Germany.
Expected to be based on the Audi Q5 platform, the newcomer will give Porsche a compact SUV to slot below the current full-size Audi Q7-based Cayenne. Porsche says the Macan is a vital cog in its model portfolio-expanding ‘Strategy 2018’.
The actual word ‘Macan’ comes from the Indonesian word for ‘tiger’ and according to Porsche this translates into suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.
“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of an SUV and is a genuine Porsche,” explained Porsche sales and marketing boss Bernhard Maier.
