Performance marque Porsche have made the decision to kill its diesel offerings altogether, saying that the future of the brand simply doesn’t lie in diesels given that the company’s seen a sharp uptick in interest and sales in its hybrid models. Additionally, Porsche’s lack of in-house diesel engines means that it’s relatively easy to phase out the oilers; The diesels offered by Porsche are all supplied by Audi.
“Our aim is to occupy the technological vanguard – we are intensifying our focus on the core of our brand while consistently aligning our company with the mobility of the future. Porsche is not demonising diesel. It is, and will remain, an important propulsion technology. We as a sports car manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free. Naturally we will continue to look after our existing diesel customers with the professionalism they expect.” — Oliver Blume, CEO, Porsche AG
Porsche has plunged quite a lot of its resources into the electric mobility, with some €6-billion already poured into the endeavour. This commitment to sustainable mobility has paid dividends: 63% of Porsche Panameras sold in Europe are now petrol-electric hybrid models, a stark change from when the model first debuted and racked up considerable interest in diesel-propelled variants.
Additionally, Porsche hasn’t had a diesel model in its lineup since February, when the company canned the Panamera Diesel and Macan S Diesel, its two remaining oil burners (as the Cayenne did not debut with diesels when it was renewed to a new generation earlier this year). Porsche’s intent to move towards e-mobility will be perhaps best exemplified when the Taycan arrives in 2019, with its carbon-neutral manufacturing process and zero-emissions drive.
By 2025, the company says that “every second new Porsche vehicle could have an electric drive,” suggesting the inclusion of either hybrid powertrains or full-EV powertrains. Internal combustion will continue to be optimised too, as “purist, emotional and powerful sports cars will continue to play in important role in the Porsche product portfolio.”
