With all the racing games out there, even one of particular note that features Australia as a speed-lover’s paradise, the lack of Porsche cars in nearly all of them has been sorely lamented over the years. In case you didn’t know, that’s due to the fact that the Stuttgart automaker has an exclusive licensing deal with EA Games.
This means Porsches, one of the world’s eminent sports car makers, has not featured in any racing game outside Electronic Arts’ properties such as Need For Speed. This means no GranTurismo, no Project CARS, and no Forza. But that all might change soon as that pesky agreement might be dissolved some time soon, with Porsche not keen on a renewal.
There are no official statements on this matter yet, but a report from German website Speedmaniacs seems confident that due to efforts by Kuno Simulazioni, the developer behind racing sim Asseto Corsa to include Porsche cars in an upcoming expansion pack will end up benefitting the entire racing game landscape by allowing Porsche to license their cars for use in any game developer who asks nicely.
We’ll have to keep our ear to the ground to see if there’s any credence to what, for now at least, remains as a probably rumour. But the prospect of finally being able to enjoy cars like the Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, or even the 959 - even if only virtual - is very exciting.
