It just wouldn’t be a Frankfurt Motor Show without something special from Porsche – this time the latest generation 911 no less.
Porsche says we can expect the latest 911 to be lighter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient than the current model. European sales commence in December.
Absolutely no surprises with the exterior design which traces its roots back to the first Porsche 911 back in 1962. The latest version will have a wheelbase 100mm longer for enhanced interior space, a lower roof line and wider track as well as a wider variably extending rear spoiler while Porsche fanatics will notice the new-design exterior mirrors have shifted to be mounted on the upper edges of the doors.
The latest edition of the world’s most recognizable sports coupe also makes use of more aluminium to trim 45kgs from its weight.
Under the bonnet are some new powerplants (flat six-cylinder Boxer of course) – a 3.4-litre for the 911 with 263kW and a 300kW 3.8-litre for the Carrera S. Fuel consumption is down by up to 16 per cent and the 3.4-litre engine is Porsche’s first sports car under 200g/km for C02 emissions.
Underneath the longer wheelbase, wider track, new rear axle and new electro-mechanical power steering promise enhanced driving dynamics. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control is available for the first time on the 911 Carrera S.
Inside the classic five dials are maintained, but Porsche has used its Carrera GT model to influence the new 911’s interior design – most noticeably via the rising centre console and higher mounting for the gear-lever.
