Two engines, four trims, and great value.
The second-generation Peugeot 3008 SUV will be on our shores very soon, and so the local arm for the French manufacturer has released further details on their 2017 European Car of the Year winner. The five-door family SUV will be arriving in no less than four variants with two engine choices on offer, along with plenty of kit and attractive introductory drive-away pricing.
The lineup will now stand as so:
- 3008 Active THP165: $36,990 ($39,990 introductory drive-away)
- 3008 Allure THP165: $39,490
- 3008 GT-Line THP165: $43,490
- 3008 GT BlueHDi180: $49,490
*Prices exclude on-road costs
The 3008 comes dressed in a sharp suit, better fitting the new Peugeot corporate image down to a tee. The Griffith badge now sits neatly within the grille, flanked by sharp LED headlights (on GT-Line and GT models) replete with sequential LED indicators. While some of the look-at-me bits are reserved for higher-end models, as standard, the 3008 at least gets alloy wheels as standard (ranging from 17” to 19” in size), LED taillights, and aluminium roof bars.
There are two engines on offer, with a forced-induction petrol for the Active, Allure, GT-Line models and a brawny diesel reserved for the GT. The THP165 petrol packs 121kW and 240Nm in its 1.6-litre package, sending power through a 6-speed automatic gearbox as standard (no do-it-yourself gearbox here). It’ll hit 100km/h from rest in just 9.9-seconds, and hit a top-speed of 201km/h while maintaining a respectable 7.0L/100km rated fuel consumption figure.
The more powerful BlueHDi180 oiler packs a greater punch in every regard, as befitting the GT trim it powers. Measuring in at 2.0-litres, the oiler pushes out a substantial 133kW and 400Nm of torque, capable of rocketing the 3008 GT from rest to 100km/h in just 8.9-seconds (an entire 1-second improvement over the petrol). Power goes to the front wheels via the same 6-speed automatic gearbox, while consuming a miserly 4.8L/100km on the combined cycle.
Tech is well catered for as standard with the 3008, with all cars featuring things like Peugeot’s latest i-Cockpit interior design, comprising of a compact multifunction steering wheel, a configurable 12.3-inch colour heads-up display, and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen that controls most commands (like the climate control and infotainment systems). Safety credentials are strong here too, with things like adaptive front airbags, dynamic stability control, driver attention alert, lane departure warning, ISOFIX tethering for child seats and cruise control, all coming in as standard.
Some 591L of cargo space is available behind the rear seats, maximisable to 1670L with the rear “Magic Flat” rear seats folded, uh, flat. All cars get things like DAB digital radio, Mirrorscreen smartphone mirroring systems, wireless smartphone charging, satellite navigation and voice recognition as standard, along with little conveniences like automatic lights and wipers, and an electric parking brake. Even things like keyless entry and go are standard on all but the Active trim cars, setting up the ‘Allure’ as the likely volume seller in our market.
The Peugeot 3008 will go on sale very soon, and will be joined by the larger 7-seater 5008 by the end of the year. Will the 3008 pack enough kit and value to outdo competitors like the brand-new Honda CR-V and the Kia Sportage? Time will tell.
