The Peugeot 308 has been around the bush, shall we say. Proof of this is the fact that the French automaker has just announced production numbers have just surpassed the 1 million mark with the example in question rolling off their plant in Sochaux.
In fact, workers there were witness to another milestone as the more newly introduced 3008 SUV just happened to cross the 500,000 mark. In anticipation of this, the facility tweaked their output priorities slightly to make sure both the millionth 308 and half millionth 3008 rolled off the line pretty much simultaneously.
Factoring in that the 3008 is a full 2 years younger than the current generation 308 on which it’s based, it’s production rate seems to be on a more accelerated path than the hatch. But then again, this is hardly surprising given the global appetite for the small SUV compared to the five-door hatch.
Of course, Peugeot’s math is curiously disregarding the previous generation versions of both models. That said, the company did not enjoy the kind of critical and sales success these new cars have brought.
But seeing as how the older 308 and 3008 remained in production over 6 years (the first-generation 308 is still technically being produced for the Chinese market), their collective production numbers must be considerably larger.
Currently, PSA, Peugeot’s parent company, quotes the current-generation 308 (T9) bring produced at the rate of 860 units per day while the 3008 exceeding 1,000 units, so it’s no wonder the latter managed to hit half a million in a relatively short span.
Peugeot Australia Managing Director, Ben Farlow, said: “For a brand that only truly entered the SUV space in 2017, Peugeot SUVs are now regarded as benchmarks for practicality, efficiency and design."
"Our unwavering focus on quality and design will continue into the new year with the debut of the all-new 508 Fastback and Sportswagon pair, two vehicles that are already winning accolades before launch.”
