Patent Images Preview Volkswagen’s EV Sports Car

It really isn’t something you'd expect to see wearing a Volkswagen badge. But these images gained from a patent filing, published on the Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) website and spotted by Autocar UK, show a sleek, low-slung, and very futuristic fully electric 2+2.

It could be Volkswagen’s show-stopping follow up to the ID Concept that it brought to the 2016 Paris Motor Show, featuring active aerodynamics, a single-piece large gullwing doors, and a curious lack of a transparent windscreen.

This might be due to it having advanced autonomous technology that would be able to operate entirely without driver intervention. But even still, having no view ahead doesn’t make sense and, judging by how good this car looks, it would be a shame to not be able to drive it ourselves.

We really do not know what to make of this car except to say that we’re very excited indeed to see what VW has in store for its initial premiere. If this is the direction the German automaker sees its future in electric cars, we have a lot to look forward to - except when we can’t see out the opaque windscreen.

If it’s true that this is Volkswagen’s next EV concept car, it will also be built upon their new MEB modular electric platform which is shared with the ID and will indeed underpin all of their EVs in the near future.

Speaking of the ID, that is powered by a single 125kW electric motor. In this larger, heavier and sportier model, though, a dual motor setup is all but certain to have it move with the appropriate pace. We could expect to see power and torque figures to rival the most accelerative Tesla Model S. And it would be an impressive show of force from the conservative Volkswagen.

The ID - their first fully electric production vehicle, dubbed to be as revolutionary as the original Beetle was by VW themselves - is earmarked for a market debut in 2020. It’s possible that this new sports saloon will not be far behind.
